Building GIANTS Flexible Load Management Program
Building GIANTS (Building Grid-edge Integrated and Aggregated Network of Thermal Storage) is a new Burlington Electric Department (BED) program funded by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Grid Deployment Office.
Similar to our Defeat the Peak demand response program, Building GIANTS helps BED reduce peak electric loads, lower costs and make the electric grid more resilient for everyone. BED calls Building GIANTS events more often than Defeat the Peak events and therefore offers financial incentives for participants.
By generating cost savings and promoting resilient infrastructure, BED aims to drive cost-effective electrification city-wide in support of Burlington’s Net Zero Energy goal.
Commercial & Industrial Customers
How it works
Commercial & industrial customers who enroll in Building GIANTS will integrate their building energy management systems with our flexible load management (FLM) partner, Dynamic Organics, to participate in automated load-shed events that occur during peak times of grid demand. Dynamic Organics’ software solution integrates with a building’s control protocols, so it can be tailored to occupant and operational needs. Their team can work alongside facilities managers, with controls contractors, or independently to deploy the technology. BED is targeting electrified central HVAC systems, particularly those that have already been integrated into a building energy management system, for the Building GIANTS program. We also seek to integrate with process loads and thermal storage systems, where appropriate. BED’s Energy Services team will work with each customer to determine optimal loads for FLM. Participating customers may opt out of demand reduction events at their discretion.
How Will My Tenants and Occupants Be Affected?
Dynamic Organics has substantial experience in reducing electrical demand in commercial properties without impacting occupant comfort. We will collaborate closely with our customers’ facilities teams to implement GIANTS in a way that is customized to the needs of each site and its occupants.
Is There a Financial Incentive to Participate?
Preliminarily, we plan to offer an electric bill credit of $5/kW of reduction achieved during peak load events. We are actively working to finalize the $/kW incentive value. Opting out of a demand response event will not incur an additional financial penalty beyond any forgone incentive.
Residential Customers
Stay tuned! Building GIANTS is open only to commercial & industrial customers right now, but BED will offering the program to residential customers later in 2025.
