Stop or Start Service

Starting Service (Residential)

You may start your electric service by calling Burlington Electric Department at 802-865-7300 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., or by visiting the main office at 585 Pine Street in Burlington between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding holidays (note that our call-in hours are slightly different than our walk-in hours). 

Please have the following information available:

  • Social Security number,
  • Driver’s license,
  • and the name, address and phone number of the nearest relative or friend not living with you.

In 1990, BED eliminated the need for a deposit from a customer starting electric service. If a customer has been through bankruptcy proceedings within the past seven years, where a balance for electrical service has been forgiven by BED, a deposit may be required.

Moving Out? Plan Ahead and Save Time

Please plan two weeks ahead of time to schedule a time for having your electric service disconnected or reconnected. To stop your service please let us know the date you want the electricity shut off (Monday through Friday). The power may be shut off as early as 8am that day.Your forwarding address is requested when you stop service, so that you receive a final bill or a possible refund on your account.

If you need to allow your tenant to either disconnect or continue electrical service on their own, fill out the Standing Order Form.

Starting Service (Commercial)

If you want to move an account at an existing location into your business' name, please contact Customer Service at 802-865-7300.

New Service (Residential or Commercial)

If you want to add electrical service at a location where there is currently is none or you want to upgrade an existing service, please contact 802-865-7323 or fill out the New Service Application form.
